Work Experience:
-
Her first feature length post production experience
Served as sole VFX artist and leaned into the fun punk experimental aesthetic she's been known for on other productions
Film premiered at Frameline to critical acclaim
-
Every year, Weird Weekend commissions one hour of content from independent artists to screen (only once) on Daylight Savings time, after which it becomes lost media forever. Vera’s piece was titled “Joker Show” and was a late night skinamax style clip show of various Batman pornos and legally precarious joker parodies, hosted by Vera in clown make up (and not much else).
-
Vera’s first feature is a painstakeningly autobiographical, impressionist superhero parody about an unfunny transgender clown named Joker who discovers her gender identity and falls in love all while started an illegal comedy theater in Gotham City.
Shot in five days on green screen, with Vera juggling directing responsibilities and a hefty lead role
A deeply collaborative project and made during the pandemic, Vera assembled and worked with a team of 100 artists, animators, and musicians to produce a mixed media coming of age story
Premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and has screened all over the world
Praise for THE PEOPLE’S JOKER
“Coming out as a bold filmmaker with a fearless voice, prolific alt comedy editor Vera Drew’s mixed media dystopia is an experimental trans coming of age story wrapped in a scathing critique and confident rebuke of mainstream comedy. Fiercely original and deeply personal, it’s too damn good not to be seen.” – Jude Dry, IndieWire“Packed to the brim with genuinely funny jokes, unique character designs and fearless commitment to its own complex narrative, The People’s Joker does with one film what most superhero stories stretch out with sequels, prequels and tie-in shows.” – Jourdain Searles, The Hollywood Reporter
“It’s wrong to compare ‘The People’s Joker’ with other superhero movies; it has more energy, audacity, originality, and righteous rage than most of this spring’s festival-honored art-house-auteur films.” – Richard Brody, The New Yorker
“Set in the Batman universe, Vera Drew’s unauthorized trans “Joker” parody is a defiantly personal act of artistic subversion.” – Jen Yamato, Washington Post
-
The only show with the expressed purpose of getting Vera Drew sponsored by Hot Topic. As a transwoman who came out in her late 20s, Vera hoped to finally have her high school emo girl phase. As a 30 year old. On Hot Topic’s dime.
Each episode she tackled a subject related to Hot Topic culture, while humorously sharing personal details about her life, transition, and trauma.
After announcing her plans for THE PEOPLE’S JOKER on episode four, Vera turned the show into a patron only podcast for awhile.
AV Club called it “psychedelic” and “aggressively sweet.”
-
Essentially was a showrunner - served as creative producing conduit between department heads and Tim & Eric
Creatively managed all aspects of production, from the writers room all the way to edit bay.
Singlehandedly oversaw the casting process, set construction, and art direction during preproduction
Co-directed while Tim & Eric were on camera and served as lead editor through post
-
Wrote, directed, and executive produced four original web series for Tim and Eric and Adult Swim’s online TV network
“I Love David” - a doc-series starring public access legend David Liebe Hart
“SCUM” - a grotesquely surreal anthology of discarded Tim and Eric sketches, found footage, musical numbers, and 3D animation.
“Tim and Eric Quiz” - an utterly demented, 3D animation/live action game show
“Our Bodies” - Tim and Eric discuss the health, wellness, and the human body with a real medical doctor
Took initiative in elaborating on Tim and Eric’s iconic style and shaped a fresh, overall aesthetic for the network, generating over 100 original bumpers, commercials, and interstitials to be played over the live stream in between programs
-
Conceived and directed music videos for artists such as Russian Red, Babes, and Heaven Pegasus.
-
Contributed to dozens of shorts and web series (including her own talk show, This American Drew) for Highland Park’s premier DIY public access network
